If you loved the itty bitty portion of Lab 6 that was on logging in ... then this extra credit lab is for you!

I am a little confused. When I control + Alt + F1 to long in as root there is no change?

It would only change if you were previously in graphics mode or another terminal. That step is just to make sure your are on tty1. - Rich
