Here's some statistical data regarding OS distribution on the top 500 supercomputers. Far and away Linux dominates at an 87.80% share, traditional Unix taking a distant second, with a negligible Windows presence at 1%.

I heard a long time ago about linux being able to distribute processing, so you can set up a server farm of like 20 computers and they will share processing duties. I suspect this is one of the reasons for the Linux domination in the supercomputer space.
