GUID And EFI

Does anyone know much about the GUID Partition Table (GPT) or the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)?
GUID is supposedly a replacement for the conventional MBR, and EFI is supposedly a replacement for the legacy BIOS.

Wikipedia has some good info but I want to hear what others have to say about it.
I know that Apple has been fully backing these standards ever since they moved to Intel chipsets.
